You've been thinking about this mark for a while. Maybe years. You want a tattoo that carries real weight, not a design picked off a wall, but something connected to a tradition, a lineage, a visual language with actual depth behind it. You want the process to be worthy of the mark. And you want to know that the person applying it has the authority to put it there.
That's what this practice is built for.
Different blackwork has different rules. This page helps you pick the right lane before you fill out the form.

Nlaka'pamux Blackwork — Ancestral designs, symbols, and motifs carried into large-scale contemporary tattoos. Guided by consent, privacy, and cultural protocol.
Can I get this tattoo if I'm not Indigenous? Yes. The designs I share are offered as a gift from me and my ancestors to you. I hold the rights, the relationship, and the responsibility to this visual language. What's appropriate to share, I share. What needs to stay within our Nation, I protect. That's my job. The consultation is where we figure out what's right for your piece.

Blackout — Full saturation black. A reset, a statement, or a foundation for future work.

Abstract Blackwork — Power and clarity without symbols. Shape, rhythm, negative space, and how the body holds black over time.

Blastovers — A new layer built to work with what's already there. History stays in the skin.

My name is Dion Kaszas. I'm a Hungarian, Metis, and Nlaka'pamux ancestral skin marker, tattoo artist, and the editor of Truly Tribal: Contemporary Indigenous Tattooing. I've spent over sixteen years and a career that includes working towards a PhD, curating two museum exhibitions, a published book, and the co-founding of the Earthline Tattoo Collective building a practice rooted in the revival of my ancestors' visual language.
I've catalogued over 2,000 Nlaka'pamux designs, symbols, and motifs. Every piece I tattoo keeps my ancestors' work alive, and is an offering to the person who wears it.
I work out of HFX Tattoo Company in Bedford, Nova Scotia.
This journey has been strengthening, empowering, emotional, soft, hard, eye opening, tear flowing, deep breathes, conversational, thought provoking, energy changing and incredibly nurturing for my past, present and future self.
Tattoos can be transformative, challenging, powerful. When Dion Kaszas finished my back piece, I wept with relief... not because of the pain, but because I could feel "In my body" that I was finally ready to move on and heal.
I've started a project with Dion for the Nlaka'pamux Blackwork project. This has provided me the opportunity to reflect upon my experiences, challenges, and strengths as a survivor.
For me these tattoos are a physical representation of strength and endurance. I felt a sense of relief and closure as this blackwork began to cover tattoos from the years I spent in active addiction.
Remembering a previous tattoo ceremony with Dion Kaszas. Reflecting on the process of this experience and the amount of healing work emotionally, physically, mentally, spiritually, that went into it.

You've been sitting on this idea for a while. Maybe years. You want a tattoo that means something real, but you don't want to get it wrong: wrong artist, wrong design, wrong reasons.
You're not looking for just any tattoo artist. You're looking for someone whose work is rooted in a real tradition, who can tell you exactly where the designs come from, and who will treat what you're asking for with the seriousness it deserves.
That's what I do.
